Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game Review (Why you need to play!)

Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Review

This Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game review is going to give you a quick run down of why I absolutely love the game, and few things that bother me about it as well. Keep in mind that I’m no expert, or even a competitive player like the Nova squadron podcasters, but I’m sure my opinion as a new player is still valuable to the board gaming and miniature wargaming community. So why exactly do I love the X-Wing miniatures game by Fantasy Flight?

X-Wing Miniatures Game – Positives

1) Great Looking – I’ve been a miniature wargames player for over twenty years, and I usually don’t buy into pre-painted miniature games because they  simply don’t look that great.  X-Wing’s pre-painted miniatures, however, look fantastic!  A big part of this website’s goal is to help people find the time for gaming, and this game allows to play faster games then most miniature wargames.

2) The Rules – the rules are easy to learn. I watched one game and new how to play. Dead simple. The movement is one section of the rules that I really enjoy. The game gives you tons of options, but when it comes down to the actual movement of your ship, it’s absolutely easy.

3) Good Depth of Strategy – Also, one thing I wasn’t sure of when it came to X-Wing was just how much strategy the game would involve, but after I listened to a couple podcasts like the unofficial X-Wing podcast, Nova Squadron, and the Scum and Villainy Podcast, I got a really good idea that their is plenty of strategy involved with this game.

4) Speed –  45mins is it. That is fast for a board game, card game, or miniature wargame.  And since I’m someone that tries to fit family, exercise, nutrition, blogging, gaming, and geekery into every 168 hour week, I really appreciate that I can get in two games played in one and a half hours.

The Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game Review – Negatives

1) Sort of Affordable – If you want to get into the X-Wing miniatures game, you can do it for under $100 by purchasing the and one other large ship.  But, once you’ve started you’re going to notice that it is hard to be a competitive player with such a small investment.  There will be a lot of competitive cards that you can’t purchase, and bigger and better ships to purchase. But as long as your gaming group isn’t too competitive (like mine), you should be fine with your $100 investment, and a slight investment into new releases.

2) Two Factions – With only the Rebels and the Imperial factions there isn’t a massive amount of variety.  I’m hoping that there will be a mercenary faction on the way soon!  That said, there is a great deal of variety among the two factions.

3) One thing I love about Warhammer Fantasy is creating an army with a story, and this isn’t impossible with X-Wing, it isn’t as easy either.  What can I say I like to be creative :-)

So three pretty weak negatives here mean that I of course highly recommend picking up the X-Wing starter set.[/easyazon_link]. And if you decide to purchase through one of our links you’ll be supporting my quest to help others be the healthiest and happiest geeks they can be!
